History

Our store at 221 Cumberland Avenue has an interesting past.  This partially subterranian unit once was a bar according to our landlord, whose grandfather built the building.  And he tells us that both Cormac McCarthy and James Agee used to drink here.  We believe him, as McCarthy did use the bar, anachronistically, in his novel Sutree.  This is “The Huddle,” where Sutree goes to get beer in fishbowls.  An interesting thing is that Sutree took place 2 years before this bar opened.
