There’s an exciting new promotion starting for 4th Edition D&D players – D&D Encounters! Like Friday Night Magic, D&D Encounters is designed to get players to converge on a game shop – like mine! – on a single night a week. In the case of Encounters, that night will be Wednesday!
“But, D&D takes, like, five hours to play!” some might say. Well, not in the case of Encounters! Each Wednesday is a new, single, separate ‘encounter’ that ties into an overall season’s campaign – so each night will only take an hour or two, tops! For participating, players will receive renown points that can benefit their character.
I don’t know much further about the program yet, other than that we’re likely the only place in the Knoxville area that will be participating, and the details above. If you want a bit more, I’ve copied/pasted the official announcement from Wizards of the Coast after the cut!

More comics! While it’s a slow week for tie-ins to the big Marvel and DC storylines – there’s one Blackest Night tie-in with Adventure Comics, and we’re getting a very small restock on Siege and Siege Embedded – there’s a lot of neat new series starting out that look like a lot of fun to try out! Hit Monkey #1 has a lot of buzz around it – a mysterious suited monkey that’s out to slay Deadpool! In addition, there’s Tails of Pet Avengers and Pixie Strikes Back, which definitely max out the charts on the cute factor. Another new series starting out – Choker is a new noir-genre comic that seems to have a lot of potential.

For this coming Sunday, we’ll be taking the shrink off of a game we just recently started carrying by Rio Grande – Thurn & Taxis!
The game has a Board Game Geek rating of 7.24 out of 10, and is based off of the historical Thurn and Taxis postal service in Bavaria. Much like games such as Power Grid, the game is based on management of multiple resources – do you buy new carriages, or connect more cities? This well-orchestrated balancing act – a traditional favorite style of Eurogames – is what made the game a Spiel des Jahres winner in 2006.

Now that the Worldwake prerelease is behind us, there’s three events this week that should be of interest to Magic: the Gathering players. On Thursday at 8 p.m., we’re going to hold a $5 Standard Constructed tournament for a box of Worldwake to be given away at midnight – which, coincidentally, is when we’re going to start selling boxes and packs! (Our box price will be $94.99) On Friday, we’ll do Friday Night Magic as usual at 9:30 p.m., again, Standard Constructed, to give players a chance to take their new Worldwake cards out for a test drive.
Our Worldwake Launch Party will be Sealed format – 3 Zendikar packs, 3 Worldwake packs – at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and we’ll be giving away the Launch Party promo to all participants – Joraga Warcaller! If you aren’t familiar with this card, it’s going to be a staple in all Elf-themed decks in the post-Worldwake world, and it should be well worth picking up a copy.

Couple of big hits for this week’s comic releases – Siege continues with #2 of the main title, as well as another installment of Siege Embedded. In DC, it’s a relatively light week, though there is a release for the third and final part of Blackest Night Wonder Woman and a one-shot with The Question.
